Rat-bitten Mahaica toddler died of brain inflammation

A post-mortem examination which was performed on Mahaica toddler Rebekah Seetaram who was bitten about her body by rats some three weeks ago revealed that several brain abscesses contributed to her death.

According to the police Public Relations Office, the PM which was conducted by Dr Bridgemohan on Friday last, indicated that the child died from meningoencephalitis (a disease which resembles meningitis  as well as encephalitis, which is an infection or inflammation of the brain). This was compounded by brain abscesses.

A neighbour noted that the child’s family had been verbally abusing persons in the area since the authorities took away the 4 and 6 yr old children of the mother. The child’s neighbours noted that the Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA) should keep the children and find a better home for them since their biological mother and her family are not in a position to care for them.

The 18-month-old Seetaram succumbed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital on Easter Monday after being a patient there for some two weeks. She was being treated for bites about her body that she allegedly sustained from rats at her 92, Belmont, Mahaica home where she lived with her parents.

CCPA Director Ann Greene had earlier said that the children are in the temporary care of the CCPA, pending a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of their sibling as well as their living conditions.

She added that reports are that the children never attended school.  She said that there are reports of the highest level of social dysfunction within the extended family.
