Sleep Inn employee stabbed by jealous partner at Karaoke session

Thursday night Karaoke at the Sleep Inn International Hotel, at Brickdam Georgetown, ended tragically for Malika Benjamin, after she was stabbed with a broken bottle several times by her partner, Rawle Nickles.

According to Manager of the hotel, Clifton Bacchus, the woman is employed by him as a receptionist at his Church Street branch and Nickles is a construction worker there.

He said that on Thursday evening, the couple arrived at the hotel’s poolside and Benjamin sang most of the night. However, she was later seen sending a text message that made Nickles jealous and, enraged, he broke a Guinness bottle and stabbed her several times about her body.

Bacchus said, “He bruck the Guinness bottle he had in he hand and stabbed her, then security jump pon he and take he to the station.” He added that the woman was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by some guests who knew her and she was discharged some time yesterday.

The incident occurred in front of many guests and Bacchus said there was nothing he could have done to avoid it because the couple went to his place of business as customers and not as employees.

He told Stabroek News that the couple has two children together. He said as far as he knew, the woman had returned home, while the man remains in police custody.
