Brazilian remanded on illegal shotgun charge

A Brazilian man was remanded to prison on Tuesday by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm.

Rudolpho Antonio Figueira Souza is accused of having in his possession one 12-gauge single barrel shotgun without being a firearm licence holder on April 24 at Mango Landing, Wenamu River in the Essequibo.

He was also charged with the illegal possession of ammunition but Police Prosecutor Steven Telford requested that this second charge be withdrawn on the grounds that the particulars did not relate to the charge.

With the assistance of an  Immigration Officer serving as translator, the Brazilian pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him. The case was then transferred to the Kamarang Magistrates’ Court.
