Suspect in attempted rape of 10-year-old still on the lam

Almost two months after a 10-year-old girl was found with visible marks of violence about her body, the man who allegedly abducted and attempted to rape her remains on the run while police and the Child Care and Protection Agency continue their investigations.

It was reported that the child was beaten by the man, whom she knows, when she put up a resistance during the attempted rape.

She was subsequently left in an unconscious state in a clump of bushes in Sophia on March 16. The girl, who attends an East Coast Demerara school, was found crawling out of the bushes by persons in the community who had said she was heard painfully groaning.

A source yesterday informed this newspaper that the girl is now being properly cared for and has been sent back home with her parents. It was noted that the man implicated, who the child said belongs to her community, has since fled the village and has gone into hiding.

The police investigation continues. Officials of the CCPA are also looking into the matter.
