Two nabbed after ambushing cop on Berbice road

Two men are in custody and are expected to face charges soon after one of them allegedly attacked a policeman with a knife and later stole his gun.

The incident occurred after 9:15 on Thursday evening, along the Crab Island Public Road, in Berbice.

Police, in a statement, said the police constable who was the victim of the attack had picked up the two men at Ogle, on the East Coast of Demerara and was driving with them in a car.

“One of the men requested that the vehicle stop in order for him to urinate, during which the other man who was in the rear seat, pulled out a knife and held up the policeman,” police said, adding that the constable reacted and managed to discharge rounds from his service pistol, which caused the man outside to run away.  However, at the same time, the policeman accelerated the vehicle and lost control and crashed into a concrete structure, which left him in a dazed state.

During this time, the man who was still in the vehicle took away the rank’s service firearm and escaped into the nearby bushes, according to police.

The man who had run away earlier was subsequently arrested by the police in the vicinity of the Berbice Harbour Bridge, while the second suspect was apprehended among the bushes at Crab Island by the police yesterday afternoon. The constable’s weapon was also recovered.
