Digicel responds to Jamaica tax administration

(Jamaica Gleaner) Telecommunications Company Digicel has responded to comments by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) following Friday’s tax raid at Digicel’s New Kingston offices.

In a brief statement this afternoon Digicel dismissed suggestions that it may not have fulfilled its tax obligations.

The TAJ has said the operation was aimed at retrieving records and documents as part of an investigation to ascertain if the GCT paid by Digicel customers was being paid over in full to the tax authorities.

According to the TAJ, it was forced to obtain a court order to search for the information after Digicel failed to comply with its request.

However, the telecoms company has maintained that it has been supplying the required information to the tax officials over the past months.

Today Digicel insisted that every dollar of GCT collected by the company from customers has been paid over on time, to the tax authorities.

Digicel is expected to return to court tomorrow to challenge the court order granted to the TAJ to search it offices.
