Man remanded over murder of US-based Guyanese

The man who is accused of murdering US-based Guyanese, Walter Sankar, at Kingston, Georgetown, was yesterday charged with the capital offence when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Patrick Leonard was not required to plead to the charge which was read by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.

It is alleged that between last Wednesday and Saturday at Kingston, Leonard murdered Sankar, beating him in the head with a galvanized pipe. Leonard is said to be mentally challenged. Sankar later succumbed at the Woodlands Hospital while receiving treatment on Saturday. A post-mortem examination performed by Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh on the body of Sankar revealed that he succumbed to excessive internal bleeding and blunt trauma to the head. Leonard was remanded to prison by the magistrate and will make his next court appearance tomorrow.
