Armed robbery convict stabbed in prison

A robbery under arms convict was brutally stabbed in the Camp Street prison yesterday and his mother fears that more harm may come his way.

Adrian Bishop, age 24, who is serving a two-year sentence and is due to be released in a month’s time sustained a broken  arm and stab wounds to his head and other parts of the body during the incident.

Though he had lost a lot of blood and appeared weak, he was returned to the prison yesterday afternoon after spending several hours at the Georgetown Hospital where he received treatment.

Stabroek News was unable to contact Director of Prisons Dale Erskine.

“I want them to really check he and mek sure he alright. Suppose he bleed to death overnight… Regardless of if he bad he is my child”, a worried Adriene Benjamin said last night.

The woman said that she is certain that her son is in no condition to help himself in prison stating that her son has been labeled a snitch and may be attacked again.

She recalled that around 11 am she received a telephone call. The person on the other end, she said, enquired if she was “Bishop’s mother”.

Benjamin said that the caller informed her that her son had been stabbed while prison wardens looked on. The woman said that the caller told her that three prisoners armed with `jukkers’ and another armed with an iron crow bar stood over Bishop who was attempting to parry the blows.

Soon after, she received the same information from Bishop’s girlfriend and on realizing that there was some truth to the information they rushed down to the prison.

When they arrived, she told this newspaper, Bishop had already been taken to the hospital. She said that at the hospital she found her son in the accident and emergency room dressed in prison clothes. She said that from all indications his clothing was changed before he was rushed to the hospital.

The worried woman recalled that at the time he was bleeding through his nose and one of his eyes was badly swollen.  She detailed how her son was stabbed in his head, chin, waist, back and buttocks among other places by the inmates he has an ongoing feud with. She said that the leader of the gang who attacked her child was charged with robbery under arms. X-rays, she said, revealed that Bishop also sustained a fractured right hand.

She said that while at the hospital her son repeatedly told her that he was feeling unwell and despite that he was taken back to the prison.

Benjamin said that at this point she insisted that a second doctor see him to ascertain if he was fit to be returned to the prison but he was still sent back to jail.

According to the woman this is the second time he was attacked. She said that about a year and half ago he was stabbed in the belly but was not taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“My son complained about the prisoner (name given) before to me. He and his crew could do as they like. They believe Adrian is a snitch”, explaining that her son would usually make complaints to a particular prison warden.

Every time those complaints are made she said her son has to be moved because “he does be attacked and I tired with dat”. She questioned why her son is being kept in the same block with the attackers.
