Bartica woman on wounding charge stemming from love triangle

Blossom Holder, accused of wounding another woman, was on Monday admitted to bail in the sum of $250,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton.

The allegation against Holder is that on June 10, at Bartica, she unlawfully and maliciously wounded Sonia Khan, with intent to maim, disfigure or cause her grievous bodily harm. The attack allegedly was triggered by a row over a man known to both Holder and Khan.

Holder, of 84 Fourth Avenue, Bartica, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of felonious wounding, when it was read to her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Attorney Shellon Boyce, who represented the accused, said that the incident stemmed from a love triangle. Counsel noted that her client was also injured by the virtual complainant (VC) during the incident and expressed shock that there was no cross charge for Khan.

The magistrate, who took note of a visible wound on the defendant’s forehead, enquired if there was a cross charge for the VC as well. The prosecution replied in the negative and the magistrate cautioned the police to exercise greater competence in their work.

When the magistrate enquired if the accused had been sent for a medical in view of the visible wound, the prosecution replied in the affirmative.

The magistrate then pointed out that as a result there should have also been a cross charge for the VC.

According to the lawyer, it was the VC who was the aggressor when she became annoyed that her client was conversing with the man who is supposedly in the love triangle.

The prosecution had no objection to the defendant being granted her pre-trial liberty but requested that bail be set in a substantial sum.

Holder was subsequently placed on $250,000 bail and her matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court for June 21.

The attorney requested a reduction in bail but this was denied as the magistrate stressed that the allegation is a serious one.
