Prosecution closes case in Neesa Gopaul murder PI

The prosecution yesterday closed its case in the Neesa Gopaul murder preliminary inquiry and June 29 has now been set as the date for the defence to lay over submissions to the court.

After that, the prosecution will then respond to those submissions and then a date will be set for a ruling in the matter.

When the matter was called, policewoman Jennifer Somrah once again took to the stand where she was briefly questioned by the prosecution before stepping down. The defence had no questions for the witness at yesterday’s hearing and so she was not cross-examined.

Neesa Gopaul

Neesa’s mother, Bibi Sharima Gopaul, and her lover Jarvis Small were charged with the teen’s murder. The allegation is that between September 24 and October 2 at Madewini, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, Bibi Sharima Gopaul and Small, both of 13 Public Road Leonora, West Coast Demerara, murdered Neesa Lalita Gopaul.

Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos is representing Small while Bibi Sharima Gopaul is being represented by attorney Vic Puran, who was absent yesterday.

The preliminary inquiry (PI) is being heard at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
