A man accused of snatching a policewoman’s gold chain from her neck while she was on her way home from church was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Jermaine Eastman who resides at 101 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust is that on June 10 at Georgetown, he stole from the person of Samantha Williams one gold chain valued $80,000.
The accused denied the charge of larceny from the person when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The facts of the prosecution are that on the day in question, the virtual complainant (VC) was walking west along Croal Street when the accused rode up from behind her and snatched the chain from round her neck.
The police constable who is an acknowledged athlete in the Guyana Police Force ran behind the accused and hit him with her umbrella at which point he looked back at her; causing her to see his face.
The VC said that she ran behind the accused but he managed to escape because her running was hindered since she was wearing high-heel shoes at the time.
Eastman was later identified by the policewoman while he was at the police station after being picked up in a raid.
The labourer was informed that he would be remanded to prison. The case continues on July 6.
