A day after he was brutally chopped at Barakat Backdam, Cuyuni River, a miner yesterday succumbed to his injuries.

Dead is Kevin Huggins, 29, of Johanna Cecilia, Essequibo Coast.

Police, in a statement yesterday, said their investigations have so far revealed that  Huggins was “involved in an incident” at around  1am on Wednesday,  during which he was chopped about his body.

Huggins was admitted to the Bartica Hospital and died yesterday while receiving medical treatment, police added.

It is unclear if police arrested anyone in connection with the murder.

Stabroek News was unable to make contact with the man’s relatives.

Crime in the interior (E&F Division) has always been a source of concern for the police force, owing to a shortage of manpower and resources in addition to the terrain.

So far for the year there have been nine murders in the interior.
