Rotary Club of Demerara launches School Leavers Handbook

Upper secondary school students are expected to benefit from the School Leavers Handbook which the Rotary Club of Demerara launched on Tuesday.

The handbook aims to assist students who are leaving secondary school to make an informed choice about their career path by exposing them to various career areas as well as offering guidance in the area of work.

The handbook features a wide variety of career choices as well as guidance on preparing a job application, resume and curriculum vitae.

The book also has a list of the various programmes of study available at the University of Guyana, Guyana School of Agriculture and the University of the West Indies.

Students from various secondary schools were presented with copies of the handbook at the launching ceremony.

The project which costs over $1 million was made possible through the contributions of the business community.

Approximately 2,500 of the handbooks were printed and are available for free distribution to students around the country.

Distribution, which will begin next week, will be done through Rotarians, persons from the private sector and persons from the Ministry of Education who will liaise  with members of the Rotary Club.

Rotary Clubs throughout the country will also have copies available.

Copies of the handbook

President of  Demerara Rotary, Komal Ramnauth, said that more copies of the handbook will be printed shortly and the club is looking to make a CD version of the book as well as having the information available on their website so as to facilitate easy access from anywhere. He also mentioned that the exercise is a continuous process that will extend into the next year or two.

Meanwhile, Director of the Guyana Prison Service, Dale Erskine, also received 100 copies of the book for inmates at the prison.  The donation, according to him, can serve as a guide for young prisoners while opening their views to different career options.
