Committee shortlists four for UG vice-chancellor post

A committee to select the University of Guyana’s new Vice-Chancellor (VC) has been established and four candidates have since been shortlisted; they are expected to soon be interviewed before one is chosen to take up the office vacated by Professor Lawrence Carrington.

The position formerly held by Carrington became vacant on April 1 this year. Candidates for this position are required to be of high academic standing and have experience in university administration.

“They should have the credibility to lead an academic community and to work effectively with the university’s many stakeholders. They should demonstrate knowledge of the issues pertinent to higher education in a developing country such as Guyana and should evince capability of providing leadership in the development and delivery of tertiary level curricula relevant to the needs of the country,” an advertisement put out by UG earlier this year said.

Stabroek News yesterday spoke to a source in the university who stated that the shortlist has been sent to council.

The source further revealed that the council was dissatisfied with the list of only four persons and suggested that more could have been selected.

When asked if Professor Daizal R Samad, Director of the University of Guyana’s Berbice Campus (UGBC) was one of the persons chosen to be interviewed, the source responded in the negative.
