So far, no link between Pest Co boss murder, fire – police

Police investigators are currently looking for a suspect in the murder of Pest Co boss Mohammed Baksh, and so far there is nothing to suggest that there is a link between his killing and the attempt to torch a building he owned, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said.

Updating Stabroek News on the case yesterday, Persaud said that for now there is no new information or development in the case. He disclosed that police are currently looking for a man who was previously involved in a court matter involving Baksh.

Asked whether the murder and the attempted arson are linked, Persaud said “we don’t know that yet” stressing that this is still being actively investigated.

Baksh, also known as Mohammed Shahabudeen Bacchus, was gunned down execution style around 10 pm on June 15 as he hung out at a grill on Thomas Street. Reports are that two armed men walked up to the table where Baksh, 43, of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara was sitting with friends and opened fire. He sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and one to the hand. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) but died the following morning while being prepared for emergency surgery.

From all indications, the perpetrators fled the scene on motorcycles.

A businessman who had a matter with Baksh before the High Court was subsequently detained. The man was released on station bail several days later.

Then last Thursday, unknown persons set fire to the man’s Prashad Nagar building in seven places. The fire service after receiving a call just after 2 am responded quickly and was able to extinguish the blaze before it destroyed the two storey structure which housed a storeroom, a showroom and a bond.
