Man brandished cutlass in mother-in-law’s face

A man accused of brandishing a cutlass in his mother-in-law’s face was yesterday placed on $10,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Wayne Williams, 39, is that on July 17 at Georgetown, he used threatening behaviour towards Desiree Narine, thereby resulting in a breach of the peace. Initially, Williams pleaded guilty to the charge but after his explanation in which he refuted the prosecution’s facts the court entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Police Corporal Simone Payne said that on the day in question, Williams went into his mother-in-law’s home where his wife was at the time and began cursing his wife. According to Payne, the virtual complainant told the defendant to desist from cursing his wife, who is her daughter.

The court was told that this annoyed the accused who subsequently picked up a cutlass which he placed in his mother-in-law’s face.

Payne said that the complainant subsequently pushed the weapon away and went to the police station where she reported the matter and  Williams was later arrested and charged.

After listening to the facts presented by the prosecution, Williams said that they were untrue.

“I din push no cutlass in she face,” he asserted.

The court then entered a not guilty plea for Williams and informed the parties that the matter will go to trial.

The unrepresented defendant requested bail. He said that he is a labourer and resides at 41 East La Penitence, Georgetown.

The prosecution had no objection to the defendant being granted his pretrial liberty but requested that both parties give an undertaking not to have any interference with each other since they both reside in the same yard, although in different apartments.

Both parties agreed to the conditions requested by the prosecution.

Williams was then admitted to $10,000 bail.  The matter will be called again on July 27.
