Driver who reversed and killed RC granted $150,000 bail

Mohammed Badal, the driver who struck down and killed a 67-year-old Rural Constable on Thursday, was granted $150,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore yesterday at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Badal, 28, of 302 Lusignan, East Coast Demerara was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He had reportedly reversed his minibus and struck down Nazartoon Ali seconds after she disembarked the vehicle and walked to its rear.

The woman, who was attached to the Beterverwagting Police Station, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The accused will reappear at the court on October 19.

According to information received by this newspaper, the accident occurred some time after 12 noon when Ali was travelling back to her Pigeon Island home after leaving the Mon Repos market. Reports are that the bus rolled over the woman and her body had to be pulled from underneath

The woman’s grandson, Royston Dorwark, expressed doubt that the driver in this matter will be brought to justice for the death of his grandmother.

Dorwark said he wants the driver to be punished so he can learn his lesson and be a more cautious driver. He said that the driver’s relatives have since visited the home to speak with the dead woman’s husband but he was not sure about the outcome of that discussion.
