Probation Department to intervene in couple’s ‘jealousy’ ruckus matter

Deon Williams of Lot 7A Laing Avenue was on Friday brought before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting his wife.

Williams pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on July 16, he unlawfully assaulted Sherry Williams, causing her actual bodily harm.

The prosecution stated that on the day in question, the Virtual Complainant (VC), who was in front of her gate, responded to a passing patrol policeman after he had said “goodnight”.

She then saw the defendant storming  out of the house and he began abusing her, saying that she “want policeman”. He then ordered her to “get out of my house”.

When she refused, the defendant yanked her hair and dealt her a cuff to the back of her neck. He then threw her onto the floor and began kicking her about her body with his boots, causing injuries.

The VC took up a bat but the defendant wrested it from her and began beating her with it.

He once again held onto her hair and placed her hands around her neck as he turned to his sister who was present and said, “I get a good mind kill her.”

After the defendant left the house, the VC reported the matter to the Ruimveldt Police Station, and she was told to go to the hospital for medical attention. The VC later returned with a medical report.

The defendant was arrested and placed in custody and later charged with the present offence.

A teary Williams, however,  appeared to be in disbelief over the allegations.

“I have a family that I really love,” he told the court. He said his wife would throw bottles and pull knives on him.

After one such incident which was reported to the police, Williams said that he saw a picture of the very policeman, who dealt with them, in the phone that he alleged was given to his wife by the same policeman.

Williams said he took away the phone and subsequently bought her a BlackBerry phone hoping that she would then be faithful to him and their family, but she continued to have the alleged affair.

Williams admitted to having a “lil scramble” with his wife on the day in question, but denied kicking her as the prosecution said.

The magistrate after examining the medical report, said that the man’s version of the fight with his wife seemed  to be more consistent with the medical, which revealed that the VC suffered only abrasions about the hands.

The magistrate then inquired who had taken the report as something seemed confusing.

The wife, however, denied having an affair and related to the court that her husband is a “jealous man”.

“He is the one who admitted to having an affair two nights back,” she told the court.

She said he is the sole breadwinner of the home since her husband stopped her from working so she can be at home to attend to their son. However, she said she’s not like most wives who are given things by their husbands. “He gives me $400 for chicken and $200 for greens every day. That’s all.”

The magistrate, after hearing the case, expressed her concerns over the conflicting reports by the prosecution and the parties involved. She urged that  more thorough investigations be conducted in  future.

The magistrate  then ordered a probation report in the matter as she acknowledged that it is in fact a serious situation which required professional help.
