Trio drowned after Friendship accident -autopsies

The three victims of Thurs-day’s Friendship, East Bank Demerara (EBD) fatal accident died as a result of drowning, post-mortem examinations yesterday found.

Police Sergeant Shurland Thomas, 40, of Lot 10 Supply, EBD; his in-law, Tameka Brumell, 22, and her brother Dayson Brumell, 26, both of Lot 8 Supply, EBD, died on Thursday morning when the car they were travelling in sped out of control and landed in a ditch.

They were all pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

When contacted yesterday, a sister of the Brumells, Stacy Brumell, said that autopsies were performed on all three and the cause of death of each was given as drowning.

Relatives had initially believed that this was the case, since it was relayed to them that the trio became trapped in the vehicle when it plunged into the trench.

The bodies of the men had fallen out of the car as it was being pulled out and onlookers had to go in to retrieve the corpses. The bodies were then placed to lie alongside each other on the parapet before being taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where they were confirmed dead.

Tameka Brumell was more than eight months pregnant. Stacy Brumell also said that the baby had been removed from her sister’s womb and was found to be a male. “We see the baby and it is already big and well-formed,” she added.

The woman said that plans are being made for her sibling’s funerals to take place next Wednesday. Thomas, she added, will be buried on Sunday with his nephew, Alwyn Carlos Thomas, 20, who died on Sunday when the motorcycle he was riding was struck from behind by a car at the corner of Camp and Lamaha streets.
