Man threatened to torch mother’s house -court hears

A man was yesterday accused of threatening to burn down his mother’s house while she and other family members were in it, after she rebuked him about peeing in their bathroom.

Jason Williams was remanded to prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of using threatening language.

The allegation against Williams is that on July 22, at Georgetown, he made use of threatening language to Francena Williams, thereby resulting in a breach of the peace.

Williams, however, denied the charge when it was read to him.

Presenting the prosecutions’ case was Prosecutor Denise Griffith-Jacobis, who said Francena Williams was at home when the defendant went home and proceeded to the bathroom to urinate in it. According to her, the woman reprimanded her son to desist from the practice, when he threatened to burn “burn down the house with all of them in it.”

The court was further told that the complainant became afraid of the threats and reported the matter to the police. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged.

When asked where he lives, a dishevelled Williams responded to the court, “I ain’t really got no fix place of abode really you know, meh worship.”

Based on this declaration by the accused, Griffith-Jacobis requested that Williams be remanded to prison, while noting that it can be problematic for the police to locate him if need be and that he may not return to stand trial. She contended too that the alleged threat made by the defendant was serious.

After listening to the objections, the magistrate informed Williams that he would be remanded to prison.

The case was transferred to Court Six for reports and fixtures on August 14.
