T&T unemployment rate falls to 4.2%

(Trinidad Express) The unemployment rate in Trinidad and Tobago fell in the last four months of 2011, the latest Labour Force Bulletin from the Central Statistical Office (CSO) showed yesterday.

The data from the CSO indicated that the unemployment rate fell from 5.2 per cent for the third quarter, 2011 to 4.2 per cent for the fourth quarter of last year.

In comparison, the fourth quarter 2010 unemployment rate was 6.3 per cent, the CSO said in a statement yesterday.

The total labour force for the fourth quarter of 2011 was 621,900 people, representing an increase of 2.0 per cent over the total labour force of 609,500 people for the third quarter of 2011.

While men continued to comprise a larger share of the total labour force at 59.1 per cent there was an increase in the number of women in the labour force of 3.8 per cent between the third and fourth quarters of 2011, the CSO observed.

The increase in the total labour force between the third and fourth quarters of last year occurred mainly among craft and related workers and elementary occupations.
