Abrams Zuil student top CSEC performer

Abrams Zuil Secondary student Sarah Hakh is the top student for Guyana at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

The Essequibo student secured 16 Grade One passes.

Hakh, when contacted, told Stabroek News that she was still digesting the shocking news of her results.

The girl, who describes herself as “just a normal teenager,” said that she knew she had the ability to perform well at the examinations, but she was surprised at being the country’s top student.

Hakh was relieved as well as at her performance, saying that she worked hard throughout her school life and that those preparations paid off. She noted that she is not a believer in extra lessons and focused instead on concentrating on her studies and striving to do well.

Hakh is now preparing to write the Standard Aptitude Test (SAT) and, if successful, she will attend college in the United States. She is, however, undecided about a career path.

The CSEC results were released today at a press conference hosted by Minister of Education Priya Manickchand.

Jennel Cadogan of Queen’s College with 13 grade ones and two grade twos

Deowattie Narine of Bishops’ High School with 13 grade ones

Kaleshwar Singh of Bishops’ High with 13 grade ones

Meikel Mahabir of West Demerara Secondary with 13 grade ones

Bibi Ameena Nazaralie of the Saraswati Vidya Nikhetan with 13 grade ones

Adidah Bacchus of the ISA Islamic Academy with 12 grade ones and three grade twos

Benedict Sukra of Queen’s College with 12 grade ones and two twos

The press conference was also told that there has been a 10% increase in the numbers of grades one to three passes in the schools that a pilot project was implemented in by the Ministry. Manickchand had this year initiated a programme for a rapid increase in passes in the core subjects of Mathematics and English A.
