Man killed in Land of Canaan crash

A man is now dead after two vehicles collided along the Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara Public Road on Sunday night.

Rafeek Mohamed, 53, of Friendship Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was taken after the accident.

The accident occurred around 6:45pm, as the vehicle in which Mohamed was travelling, which was being driven by his son, hit another vehicle that was turning into a roadway in the vicinity of the Barama Company Limited operations.  Both drivers are in police custody assisting with the investigations.

Reports are that Mohamed and his family were returning home from an outing on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, at the time.

Police said that the driver of motor vehicle PKK 5609 was turning at the time, when the driver of motor car PMM 5690, in which Mohamed was a passenger, is alleged to have attempted to overtake it, resulting in the collision.

Mohamed and his wife Jasmattie Sookra were injured as a result and they were both referred to the Diamond Centre, where Sookra was treated and sent away.

When this newspaper visited Mohamed’s home at Friendship yesterday, persons there preferred not to speak about the accident. Mohamed’s brother stated that he was too traumatised to speak as he and other relatives erected a tent in front of the home.
