Animal exporter charged with assault of cops

An animal exporter was yesterday accused of two counts of assault on two peace officers while in police custody.

Samuel Katoo was also charged with disorderly behaviour when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was placed on $50,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.

It is alleged that on August 22, Samuel Katoo, 31, of 9 Grove Housing scheme East Bank Demerara, unlawfully assaulted Police Constable Neil Thornhill, a peace officer on duty. It is also alleged on the day in question that Katoo assaulted Police Constable Devon Lowe, to prevent lawful apprehension.

Katoo, who was in tears, made an application for bail.

Attorney Gordon Gilhuys, who made an appearance for the accused, sought nominal bail.

No details on what transpired on the day in question were provided to the court.

However, the prosecution had no objections to bail and Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton granted the accused $50,000 bail in one sum.

The matter was then transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for October 17.
