Trini doubles vendor killed over TT$4

(Trinidad Express) Four dollars.

That was the quantity of money Nathaniel “Tanny” Baggy’s killer refused to pay for a doubles he had eaten.

So upset was the killer at having to pay for the doubles he consumed that he went to his car and returned with a knife and stabbed 23-year-old Baggy repeatedly about the body. He was killed on his birthday, pushing the murder toll to 273 for the year so far.

According to police reports, around 1 a.m. Baggy was with his brother, Nicholas, a doubles vendor, at the corner of Cipriani Boulevard and Tragerete Road, Port of Spain, when a customer began to argue about paying for the food, saying he had eaten it already and was not going to pay for it.

The man, who had already paid for the first doubles he had eaten and refused to pay for another, went to his vehicle and returned with a knife and stabbed the vendor to death.

At their home at Unity Springs, Rich Plain, Diego Martin, yesterday, Baggy’s relatives said he had just returned from celebrating his birthday at a magic show, where his brother-in-law, Keston “The Illusionist” Rodriguez, was the headliner.

Baggy the father of a three-year-old son, Nathaniel Baggy Jr, and an eight-month-old son yet to be named, was a doubles vendor as well as a taxi-driver.

Baggy’s aunt, Sharmila Nero, told the Sunday Express Baggy’s mother, Anjanie Baggy, was too distraught to speak.

Nero said her nephew escaped death on August 11, when a tree fell during the heavy rains in west Trinidad and nearly crushed him.

“Look that come and passed and two weeks later, the exact time (when the tree fell) this happen,” Nero said.

Baggy’s sisters and cousins, who were at the family’s residence, all said the same thing of him. He was a good, loving, decent young man, who would lend a helping hand to anyone.

His family said he was respected in the community and trusted by all.

They added that since he was not a drinker, he was the automatic designated driver and was willing to leave his home, no matter what time of day, to assist any family member or friend. The family said all they want now is justice.

Sgt Springer, of the Port of Spain CID, is continuing investigations.
