Barbados gets praise for elderly programmes

(Barbados Nation) Barbados has been recognized for piloting three of the Caribbean’s best programmes that serve the elderly.

Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett said two of those programmes fell under the National Assistance Board (NAB).

“I am particularly pleased to inform you that at the Third Regional Intergovernmental Conference On Ageing In Latin America And The Caribbean which was recently held in Costa Rica, a subregional report on the implementation of the Brasilia Declaration In The Caribbean dealing with the care of the elderly was presented to the delegates.

“In that report, ten programmes within the Caribbean were highlighted as ‘best practices’ that serve older persons, out of which three programmes in Barbados were highlighted.

“The programmes in Barbados that received this acclaim were the National Assistance Boards’ Home Care Programme and the Nursing Pilot Project.

“The third programme was the Community Development Department’s Information Communication Technology Programme.

“This clearly shows the high regard in which persons abroad view the way that we in Barbados take care of our elderly.

“Please be assured that we will not rest on our laurels but will strive to do even more to make the lives of our senior citizens as comfortable as possible,” he said.
