Ex-employee accused of stealing from supermarket

A former employee was yesterday charged with stealing almost $200,000 from the Survival Supermarket.

Savitri Ramnauth, 18, of Lot 3 Triumph, East Coat Demerara was accused of larceny by clerk or servant, when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that Ramnauth, being employed by Survival Supermarket, stole $198,342 from the place of employment.

No further details of the offence were provided to the court.

She was represented by attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who said his client was unemployed since the incident and therefore he requested reasonable bail be set.

The prosecution had no objections to bail for the accused and bail was set at $85,000.

The matter was then transferred to Court One for October 3.
