Sundar Popo’s son sent to prison

(Trinidad Express) The son of deceased chutney singer Sundar Popo was yesterday sent to prison.

Hemant Sundar, 45, pleaded guilty to having cocaine in his possession along with a device to smoke the drug.

Around 2.35 p.m. on Tuesday, police officers saw Sundar walking along Rushworth Street, San Fernando. In a pocket of his trousers, police found cocaine and the device.

Police prosecutor Gordon Maharaj said the drugs weighed 0.5 grammes.

Sundar, of Barrackpore, was charged by Constable Gerald.

He told the court he had a mental problem and worked in a bar. Asked about his family, he said they were all abroad.

“My father died,” he said.

Sundar told Magistrate Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds that he had eight or nine previous convictions.

But Ramsumair-Hinds said it was “a lot” more.

She sentenced Sundar to a year in jail for possession of the drug and five months for the device.

The sentences are to run concurrently, so Sundar will serve a year.
