Toddler drowns at Angoy’s Avenue

A toddler who was walking over to her uncle’s house died after she fell into a drain and drowned at Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam last evening.

Okeshia Thomas called ‘Princess’, who was one year and six months old, was the only child of her parents, Otheia Thomas and Nakaice Blair. Her lifeless body was pulled from the trench after 6 pm yesterday. Her parents were inconsolable and her father was up to late last night with the police after he went to make a report at the Central Police station in New Amsterdam.

According to reports, the young child was going to visit her uncle who lives opposite her parent’s home on the other side of Timmers Dam. She safely crossed the bridge from her parent’s home but apparently slipped and fell into the drain as she was crossing the bridge that leads to her uncle’s home.

Her grandmother, Justina Torrington told Stabroek News last night that Blair had left the toddler with Thomas. It was not clear when the girl disappeared. After noticing that the toddler was nowhere to be found, relatives began a search for her. Other residents were informed that the girl was missing and it was later suggested that the drains be checked. The child’s body was seen after the drain was checked.

The body was taken to the New Amsterdam hospital where Okeshia was pronounced dead. Her mother was inconsolable and fainted several times. Okeshia was the first child for the young couple.
Up to late last night, the father was still at the New Amsterdam police station. Investigations are ongoing.
