Ten market tarmacs handed over to NDCs

Ten of the 11 market tarmacs the Ministry of Local Government had earmarked for handing over in August  are now under the purview of their respective Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) in Regions Two, Three, Four and Five, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said in a press release.

The 11th tarmac is at Tuschen/Uitvlugt in Region Three and construction work is currently going on there.

Meanwhile, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud  reported that construction work is continuing on the market tarmac at Mahaica in  Region Four and those in Moruca and Kumaka in Region One.

Work on the Moruca tarmac is 90 percent completed while construction on the tarmac at Kumaka is set to resume. There were some technical issues regarding the tarmacs in Region One but these were resolved, the minister said.

The construction and handing over of the market tarmacs are part of government’s plan to curb the practice of roadside vending and  to achieve the practice of selling  in a healthy and conducive environment.

Apart from vending, the tarmacs can be utilised for social activities such as games and church activities.

Areas where market tarmacs were recently built include Diamond/Grove; Best Klien/ Pouderoyen; Toevlugt/Patentia; Charity; Plaisance; Buxton and Haslington, the release said.
