Work starts on potholed Bartica/Potaro road

The Region Seven Democratic Council says remedial works will start “immediately” on the 1-5 Miles, Bartica/Potaro Road potholed road, after about 30 residents staged a two-day protest in front of its office last week.

According to a press statement dated September 7, Regional Chairman Gordon Bradford and Regional Executive Officer and Hinterland Engineer attached to the Public Works Ministry, Naeem Mohammed told residents that repair works would start immediately.

Region Seven Chairman Gordon Bradford outlining plans to repair the potholed Bartica/Potaro road to placard-wielding residents after a two-day strike and protest action.

“I’m in sympathy with the residents of the area and the children that use the road to attend the Three Miles Secondary School,” Bradford told the meeting. “We have been making efforts to have the road remedied. We are sorry for frustration of residents who protested and thank residents for the peaceful way they conducted themselves,” he added.

A representative from the 1-5 Miles Community and the Bartica Minibus Association then requested a letter stating the initiatives outlined at the meeting, the release added. In exchange, the representative was asked to give assurances that the minibuses would end their strike action and restart public transportation operations.

According to the release, on September 6 material was stock-piled along the side of the road to start the works. The RDC then pleaded with residents not to remove the materials as this would impede works. A representative from the ministry was also employed to overlook contracts to ensure that works are done properly.

At the close of the meeting the RDC again thanked residents for their patience and invited them to visit the Chairman’s Office for clarification on any of the issues addressed at the meeting.
