US humanitarian unit donates generator to counselling centre

The US Embassy’s Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP) donated a 32-watt generator to the Domestic Violence Counselling Centre (DVCC) in Region Six, as it continues to provide support to curb this scourge in Guyana.

United States HAP Team Director Marcus Reeder displays the generator the agency donated to the Domestic Violence Counselling Centre in Region Six.

At the presentation ceremony on August 20, HAP Team Director Marcus Reeder emphasised US support for community organisations that seek to improve the lives of citizens in the face domestic violence, the Embassy said in a press release.

The DVCC’s Director Dr Vishalya Scharma noted that domestic violence has been escalating in Guyana over the last several years and as such there is need for a response.

The Embassy said several representatives of community organisations attended the presentation ceremony including Region Six Chairman David Armogan, the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Roadside Baptist Church. The Centre serves to deliver spousal abuse intervention, suicide prevention and to provide overall counselling to victims.
The centre is in the beginning stages of operation and it welcomed the generator donation.
