Cop charged in Shaquille Grant murder

-warrants issued for two others

A policeman was yesterday charged with the murder of 17-year-old Shaquille Grant, while arrest warrants were issued for two other lawmen who cannot be found.

Police Constable #14073 Terrence Wallace, one of the uniformed police officers alleged to have fatally shot Grant at Agricola, East Bank Demerara on September 11, was arraigned on the capital charge before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The Chief Magistrate also issued arrest warrants for Special Constable #14071 Jamal Lewis and Lance Corporal #18699 Warren Blue, who are also accused of Grant’s murder. The warrants were issued as their whereabouts are unknown to the police up to the present date.

Wallace, who was not required to plead to the capital charge, was remanded to prison until October 11, when the case will be called in Court One.

It is alleged that at Third Street, Agricola, at about 12:10 pm, the three policemen, who were on an operation in the community, observed that there were some young men under a shed in a yard and proceeded towards them and Grant was shot some time later.

The killing of Grant, of Lot 72 ‘BB’ Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was met with outrage in Agricola, as eyewitnesses said one officer was seen standing over the teen as he fired bullets into his body.

In a brief statement after the shooting, police force spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker had said that ranks on a mobile police patrol came under fire from a group of men at Caesar Street, Agricola. The ranks, he added, returned fire, fatally wounding Grant and injuring Romel Bollers. “A .38 Smith and Wesson revolver was recovered by the police,” the statement had said.

Police Constable Terrence Wallace covered his face with a blue shirt to avoid the media as he exited the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Based on a post-mortem examination, Grant was shot three times to the head, chest and buttocks.
