Rise in rearing of birds, other animals a concern

-City Council

The Mayor and City Council yesterday said it is concerned over the increase in the rearing of birds and other animals in Georgetown, while saying it would be moving against owners doing so in a manner that is a nuisance to neighbours or their communities.

According to a statement issued by acting Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis, the Environmental Sanitation Section of the City Council said over the past months it has received complaints of citizens rearing animals and birds in such a manner that it is a nuisance to their immediate neighbours and to the community.

Investigations, it added, have revealed that pens the birds and other animals are kept in are not properly cleaned, resulting in an offensive odour.

In some cases, it noted, animals such as cows, goats and sheep are not properly tethered and are left to roam the city’s streets and private dwellings, causing damage to private property. Commu-nities where this particular nuisance exists include Wortmanville, Albouys-town, Sophia, McDoom, Agricola, South Ruimveldt and North Ruimveldt.

As a result, the City Council is advising owners of poultry and other animals that it is unlawful to permit them to run at large or to be a menace or nuisance to the public. It added the law defines nuisance to include any animal so kept to be a nuisance or injurious to health or any accumulation or deposit which is a nuisance or injurious to health.

In addition, it said the City Public Health unit will take steps to ensure that nuisances emanating from this type of activity are abated speedily.
