Six months on…No word on suspects in Nikita Ramischand murder

Six months after the murder of 18-year-old Nikita Ramischand in Trinidad, family members of the main suspect and his alleged accomplice say they have not heard from them and are beginning to believe they have died.

Ramischand, the daughter of prominent Guyana-born attorney Odai Ramischand, was killed on April 25, with the main suspect being a 25-year-old Guyanese construction worker, Ramesh ‘Alvin’ Sookram. The man fled to Guyana after the murder along with his 17-year-old cousin, Anil Persaud, who is also said to be a suspect.

Dhanwantie Sookram, mother of the main suspect, had said that her son called her around 11 pm on April 25 and indicated that he was coming home. He and Persaud arrived on a 1:15 am flight the following morning she said and revealed nothing of Ramischand’s death. Later that morning, Sookram left his home and failed to return while the cousin waited until reports surfaced of a second suspect and then disappeared as well.

Sookram said she had known the teen and had met her once in Guyana despite reports that the two had only become familiar a short while before her demise when Sookram was hired for some construction work at the Ramischands’ home.

When contacted yesterday, Sookram said she has not heard from her son since nor her nephew and both families have started to give up hope.

“Me worried about my son bad… last Thursday, the 25th, was his 25th birthday and I cry whole day. We don’t know if he alive still because we don’t hear nothing and he aint deh by no family… I hear back people saying that he de tell the girl (Nikita) family he prefer kill heself before they catch he so I don’t know if he dead somewhere,” the woman said.

She said because of the allegations against her son she has gone as far as converting from the Hindu to Christian faith. “I just hoping and praying. I was a Hindu, now I going to Christian church to pray for he, to hear from he, to see he, for something to happen… if he alive, I prefer to know and let he surrender himself but right now I just don’t know if my son dead or alive,” Sookram said.

She said she is also worried about Persaud since she does not believe he is directly involved but because of fear, has fled his parents’ home. “I think he just frighten because he been with this boy (Ramesh) and come back with he and so. He is a little, little boy,” she lamented.

Sookram said only after a few years have passed would she give up hope of ever seeing her son again but for the time being, she will hold onto hope and keep praying.

Nikita is believed to have been ambushed while walking to her mother’s salon which is situated in the compound of their LP 46 Maracas Royal Road, Maracas, St. Joseph, Trinidad home. She was reportedly dragged behind the premises and stabbed to her abdomen.

Her bloodied body was discovered behind the salon. An autopsy revealed that the teenager bled to death after her throat was slit. She also suffered six stab wounds to the abdomen.
