Smythfield painter caught with ganja -court hears

A 67-year-old painter was on Monday remanded to prison on a narcotics possession charge stemming from a drug bust at his home.

Mohamed Ali, of 231 Smythfield, New Amsterdam, Berbice pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.

According to the allegations against Ali, on October 25, police were conducting a search at his Smythfield home around 5:45am for a suspect in several break and enter and larceny matters when the narcotics were found. The court heard that the police came across a multi-coloured bag with several parcels inside in a black plastic bag that was taped up.

Leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis sativa and amounting to 6 kilogrammes, were found in the bag.

Ali is expected to return to court on November 9.
