GRA clerk dies in Soesdyke Highway crash

A  Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) clerk died after crashing into a fence along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway sometime on Tuesday night.

Dorian Welcome, 29, of Lot 574 Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke, Linden Highway, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital after he was pulled from his car. He is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before the crash.

Welcome, who was alone in the car, was travelling home when the accident occurred a short distance from his home.

The police stated in a press release that the accident occurred around 11pm on Tuesday. Welcome was driving PFF 8313 and proceeding along the roadway at a fast rate, causing him to lose control of the car, police said, adding that as a result he crashed into a fence on the western side of the road. He was then taken to the Georgetown Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Welcome’s common-law wife, Narissa Gravesande, said that she was at home when she received a call around 11 pm informing her that her husband was involved in an accident. Gravesande recalled speaking to him earlier at around 6pm, when she called him to check his location.

She works in the city as well and would travel home with him on occasion. “When I called him, he said his car was at the workshop, so I took my son and we went home,” she added.

Gravesande stated that she called her husband’s phone when she arrived home but got no response. “I call his phone but it rang out so I became worried and like five minutes later the phone rang and the person said the person who owns this phone is in an accident,” she recounted.

After she received the call, Gravesande went to the Georgetown Hospital, where she saw her husband’s body.

She said, “The doctors said he came in and there was no response… he was already wrapped up.”

She noted that while she was travelling to the hospital, she did not see the accident scene due to the position the car was in. It was only on her way back home that she was able to locate the scene.

Welcome’s mother, Brenda Nurse, told this newspaper that she heard her son’s car hit a fence and turned over. She stated that when she saw her son’s body, his head was swollen and it appeared as if his skull was fractured.

Welcome was the father of a two year old boy.
