Guyana to donate $50M to Caribbean countries hit by Sandy

The Government of Guyana has decided to make a financial contribution to the reconstruction efforts of four Caribbean countries which were significantly affected by tropical storm Sandy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

A statement from the ministry said that Sandy which had hit the Caribbean shores on October 26, 2012, left in its wake widespread destruction to property and the loss of lives in Haiti, Cuba, and Jamaica. While there were no reported deaths in The Bahamas, there was serious damage to infrastructure.

As a demonstration of its solidarity with these sister Caribbean states, Guyana will be donating US$100,000 ($20 million) to the Republic of Cuba and US$50,000 ($10 million) each to Jamaica, Haiti and the Bahamas to assist with rebuilding efforts, the statement said.
