Man beaten, stabbed by gang after car broke down at Montrose

A Sophia resident is lucky to be alive after armed men, apparently after his motor car, beat him mercilessly before stabbing him in his back, moments after the vehicle broke down on the Montrose Public Road yesterday morning.

Tribbowan Persaud, age 37, of North Sophia was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Hospital by public-spirited citizens but was left in the waiting room of the accident and emergency area for some time, according to his wife Tulsidai Persaud.

When this newspaper arrived at the Georgetown Hospital shortly after 9 am in connection with another incident, Persaud was sitting in a wheelchair. His face was so badly swollen his eyes were almost closed. He was unable to recount the incident.  His head and body  were covered in blood and his body bore visible marks of violence as a result of the multiple gun butts he sustained at the hands of the men.

Tulsidai said that he left home around 10 pm on Tuesday to take some friends to Melanie Damishana, ECD and sometime after, while he was returning to the city the vehicle broke down in the vicinity of the Apex Academy.

She said that while he was attempting to fix the problem, three armed men came up and attempted to take away his car keys. The woman said that based on what her husband told her he threw the keys away.

This apparently angered the men as they started to beat him mercilessly before stabbing him with an ice pick. The men then relieved him of $50, 000 and his cellular phone and escaped.

The woman said that her husband was rescued by public-spirited persons who took him to the hospital. She arrived sometime later.

The car was later transported to the city and a report of the incident lodged with the police.

While speaking to this newspaper, the woman expressed concerns over the amount of time it was taking for her husband to receive medical attention. She said that a mentally ill man who was beaten in the Stabroek Market area after attacking a child was given priority over Persaud.

Up to press time last evening, the bandits had not been caught.
