Accused in gold ring hold-up remanded

Tevin Cole, accused of robbing another man of a gold ring during a hold-up, was yesterday refused bail and remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Cole, 20, said to be a labourer of West Ruimveldt, appeared before the magistrate in Court 1 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of armed robbery.

It was alleged that on December 8, 2012, armed with a handgun, he robbed Wayne Wharton of a gold ring, valued $56, 000.

The prosecution stated that Wharton was walking in the company of a friend when Cole hit him with a handgun, went into his pocket and relieved him of the ring.

Cole pleaded not guilty to the charge. Although he told the court that he had no previous convictions, the prosecution nonetheless objected to bail, saying that he was a flight risk.

Cole was subsequently remanded and the case was adjourned until December 28, 2012 for the filing of statements.
