Trial for man accused of strangling wife

Paul Anthony Lo Hing, the man accused of strangling his wife, Shoala Gilgeous, in Sophia, in August, was yesterday committed to stand trial for murder in the High Court.

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who presided over the Preliminary Inquiry into the murder charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, committed Lo Hing after finding that a prima facie case has been made out against him.

The magistrate said a case was made out against him based on the evidence provided from the witnesses who testified in his presence.

The capital charge was re-read to Lo Hing, who said, “I am innocent of the charge and reserve my witnesses for the High Court.”

The magistrate then said that the Preliminary Inquiry stage had come to an end and he would therefore be committed for trial in next session of the criminal assizes of the High Court in January 2013.

Gilgeous, 23, was found dead by her niece on the afternoon of Sunday, August 26. Prior to the discovery, neighbours and Gilgeous’ sister-in-law had reported hearing the woman screaming. Her sister-in-law also said that the couple had been fighting earlier in the day.

The couple had been living together for about 10 months and Gilgeous’ relatives and friends said that she was a victim of domestic abuse and had made numerous reports to police as a
