Biker hurt in D’Urban St crash

23-year-old Kevin London was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday afternoon after his motorcycle slammed into a Route 46 minibus on D’Urban Street, Lodge and the driver of the bus has been detained by police.

There were no passengers in the Lodge bus at the time of the accident.
Eyewitnesses say that the accident, which occurred a short distance past Chapel Street around 3:50 pm, left London’s face somewhat disfigured, and opined that the nature of the man’s injuries may have been less severe had he been wearing a helmet.

Stabroek News understands that when London collided with the bus, his face slammed into the glass on the driver side of the bus, causing severe damage to his head and face.

“Is I carry de man to the hospital cause when the thing happen the man did lying down on the road calling out for help, so I went out to help he,” said a mechanic who works at a nearby vulcanizing shop. The man said he tried several times to flag down vehicles until eventually he was able to stop a taxi. “I went in the back with he and I did supporting he head so it didn’t knock into anything because it mighta de make tings worse,” said the mechanic.

“I really hope the man mek it, cause is a lil youth man u know, on de way to the hospital the man look like he wouldna mek it, but I kept steadying he head and blowing in he face. When I see he eye open and he move he head slight I seh yeah boy, he still alive, he gon mek it. I even try to go in with he at the hospital but they tell me I can’t go in with he. I hope I get fuh see he when he come out.”

London, who was conscious for a few minutes after the accident, had lost consciousness by the time he arrived at the Hospital and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit for immediate treatment.

Explaining how things played out, the mechanic said that “both of dem man did speeding. The man, who said he saw everything, stated that both vehicles were moving west along D’Urban Street when the minibus, which was some distance in front of the motorcycle, stopped, then initiated an abrupt U-turn without signalling via his trafficator.

The man said that the sudden nature of the turn left London little time to decelerate, which caused him to collide with the front right side of the bus, which by this time was positioned in the centre of the road.

The driver of the bus was  detained by police ranks who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident.
