J$1.43 billion damage to Jamaica agriculture from Sandy

(Jamaica Observer) KINGSTON, Jamaica — Damage to the agricultural sector from the passage of Hurricane Sandy has now been put at J$1.43 billion.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller in a statement to Parliament yesterday afternoon said the hurricane affected some 37,000 farmers with 3,600 farmers reporting damage to livestock totaling J$95 million.

She said that approximately 20 per cent of the un-reaped Blue Mountain coffee berries estimated at 31,600 boxes with a value of J$101 million, was lost.
