PI into attempted murder of cops to continue Friday

The preliminary inquiry (PI) into the attempted murder of Police Constables Rajindra Singh and Damintra Indrapaul, for which Colin Jones, Randy Mars, Jafar Simpson, Anthony Watson and Basil Morgan stand accused, will continue on Friday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Detective Lance Corporal Desmond Johnny, Detective Sergeant Bernette attached to the Criminal Investigation Department at Eve Leary and Moen Gafoor, owner of a car rental service, testified yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

After Bernette and Johnny testified, they were cross-examined by attorneys Nigel Hughes and George Thomas. The prosecution witnesses were further re-examined by Prosecutor Steven Telford.

It is alleged that on December 2, Jones was charged with murdering two of his former gang members and another man and was jailed for eight years on a series of other charges, including cultivation of ganja and possession of an unlicensed weapon and ammunition. Jones was jointly charged along with Mars and Simpson for discharging a loaded firearm, murder, attempted murder and setting fire to a building. Among the other charges levelled against Jones are murder, attempted murder and escaping from lawful custody.
