Ministry confident of flood relief plans

Minister of Agriculture Dr Leslie Ramsammy says his technical people are confident that interventions implemented in farm areas that flooded after persistent rainfall last month will hold up and prevent similar damage if rain continues.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, Ramsammy said he and Minister in the Ministry, Ali Baksh worked with the ministry’s technical staff and farmers to address flooding in the Canal Polder areas and in Region Three, which were severely affected.

GINA said Baksh has been working closely with staff from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority to ensure optimal performance from drainage and irrigation structures countrywide. Dr Ramsammy said that generally the system works and farmers who need water during the dry season have been able to source it from irrigation systems such as Dawa, Mibicuri and Manarabisi which move water from the Pomeroon and Canje rivers into the rice farming areas.
