Police lose 1 kg cocaine

Police today said that last Friday, a total of ten police ranks from the Narcotics Branch and the Tactical Services Unit, headed by an Officer, uplifted 137 packets of cocaine from Police Headquarters to be escorted to Bartica.

The police said that this was in relation to the trial of five men who have been charged following the interdiction of a quantity of cocaine in a boat at Batavia Island, Cuyuni River, during June last year.

The case was called and postponed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court following which the cocaine was escorted back to Police Headquarters.  Police said that at the time of recounting while the cocaine exhibits were being lodged at Police Headquarters, one packet containing approximately 1 kilogram of cocaine was found to be missing.

The police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is conducting investigations into this matter.
