Seventeen-year-old Samuel Cornelius who is accused of murdering Anfernee Bowman on Monday was remanded
to prison yesterday by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell after he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Cornelius of 277 Independence Boulevard was not required to plead to the charge which read that on February 27 at Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt Park he murdered Bowman.
On the day in question at about 6:25pm both Bowman and Cornelius were leaving their math lessons when they became involved in an altercation outside of the premises.
During the altercation a scuffle ensued between them and the deceased received several puncture wounds to his upper body, two of which penetrated his heart. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
After the deceased was taken to the hospital the defendant fled the scene and went into hiding, but was subsequently brought to the Police Station where the allegation was put to him. He reportedly made a written statement under caution and following further investigations he was charged and placed before the court.
He will be appearing in court again on March 21.
Bowman was a student of Chase Academy and his father Gary Bowman had earlier told Stabroek News that his son’s friends indicated to him that they saw what had transpired.
Bowman further told Stabroek News that Anfernee had attended Trust College with Cornelius at one point but he subsequently transferred his son to Chase Academy. They only met at lessons which his son had been attending for the past 6-7 months, he said.
The defendant surrendered to the police on Wednesday in the company of his lawyer.
