Bourda market vendor shot, bandits snatch over $500,000

Police say that at about 2245h last night, vendors Errol Gardner, 42 years, and his reputed wife Thakurdai Persaud, 42 years of Vigilance, ECD, were in their Canter motor lorry at the Bourda Market, North Road, Georgetown, when they were held up by three men, all armed with firearms. The men took away a total of $320,000, a cell phone, and a quantity of jewellery.

Police say that while the armed robbery was taking place another vendor Saheed King, 30 years of Maida, Corentyne, Berbice, made efforts to assist the victims and was shot to his stomach by one of the perpetrators. He was then robbed of $200,000 by the men who escaped in a waiting motor car.

Police say that King has been admitted a patient at the GPHC.  Investigations are in progress.

In recent years vendors at the market have been attacked and robbed and they have complained that the City Constabulary has been unable to protect them
