Bee Hive farmer killed after speeding lorry hits truck

A father of two died on the spot yesterday after a speeding lorry crashed into the Canter truck he was driving on the Bee Hive Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead is 57-year-old Doodnauth ‘Lake’ Harripersaud of Lot 9 Bee Hive Village, ECD.

When Stabroek News visited the area, eyewitnesses related that Harripersaud was driving his Canter—GGG 4806—along the main road at Bee Hive and was about to turn into Rajnarine Estate when he was struck by the speeding lorry GNN 9358.

The lorry then ran into the nearby trench and driver, who was unhurt, fled the scene but was later apprehended at Mahaica, a few villages away.

Harripersaud’s wife of 37 years Rajkumarie was inconsolable as undertakers of Lykens Funeral Parlour were removing the body from the street.

The grieving woman said, “this is the first time meh husband deh in an accident and look how he dead. Watch how he lie down pon de road.”

According to Rajkumarie, her husband, a well-known farmer in the community, had been operating a farm aback of the Rajnarine Estate for a number of years.

She said he would normally go to Bourda Market and wholesale whatever produce was reaped from the farm. She added that for the past four years she had stopped going to the market with him and yesterday he had just returned home from selling at the market and had left for farm when he met his demise.

She said, “Me just done pray and then them call me and tell he how me husband get accident and he dead.”

She added that just recently a vehicle had crashed into her husband’s Canter but that matter had been settled.

When Stabroek News visited the home of Harripersaud some relatives and friends were wailing loudly while other tried to console his wife.

Irate family members are calling for justice for the man since they are upset at the fact that instead of staying at the scene and trying to assist with investigations the driver chose to flee.

Everyone gathered at the home said the farmer was a generous and kind hearted person. He now leaves to mourn his wife and two children.
