11-megawatt trip caused power outages in Demerara

The Guyana Power and Light Inc is informing consumers in the Demerara Interconnected System (DIS) that supply to sections of the East Coast and Georgetown was adversely affected yesterday as a result of an intermittent problem  which caused the inadvertent tripping of the circuit breaker linking two  5.5MW generators at the Garden of Eden Wartsila  plant to the system.

GPL said that the sudden loss of 11 MW to the DIS would have affected  consumers from Success to Mon Repos, from Lusignan to Coldingen, Sachibazaar St, Prashad Nagar & environs, C/ville south of Cummings Canal & east of Sheriff St, Lamaha Gardens, section ‘K’ C/ville, Lodge Housing Scheme, D’urban Backlands, Century Palms,  Lodge, Meadow Brook Housing Scheme, Meadow Brook Gardens, parts Wortmanville, Newburg & Stabroek, Tucville, East & North East La Pentience, Parts of Albouystown, West La Penitence and from Versailles to Roden Rust.

The power company said that the frequent interruptions were a result of the intermittent nature of the fault in the breaker control circuit.  Action has been taken to prevent the tripping while the problem is identified and corrected, GPL said.
